Correctional Services
The demand for correctional services continues to grow as increasing numbers of offenders are held on remand, sentenced to custodial supervision, sentenced to probation with community supervision or are on parole. New prisons have been commissioned in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland and prisons are planned or are being built in Tasmania, ACT and Northern Territory. In general, correctional services is the responsibility of State and Territory governments and there is a Department for Correctional Services in every State and Territory. There are custodial centres in all capital cities and in many regional centres. Community Corrections offices are in metropolitan and regional centres, based on the concentrations of corrections clients. Correctional staff also travel to remote and Indigenous communities to supervise and monitor the progress of offenders in meeting their obligations.

Nationally, the Correctional Service employs approximately 30,000 staff and is experiencing skill shortages in the following areas:
