The Audit Office of NSW
Each Year the Audit Office of NSW
offers places to HSC students interested in undertaking
a degree in Accounting. Trainees work full-time and study
part-time, taking between four and six years to complete
their degree.
The Audit Office School Leaver Recruitment Program provides
accounting, auditing and computer training and offers the
benefits of study leave and financial assistance. All compulsory
fees and charges including HECS/HELP are reimbursed by
the agency once you pass the subjects. Plus, flexible work
practices (such as part-time work, compressed weeks/fortnights
and leave without pay) make it easier to complete your
studies quickly.

Hunter Water offers cadetships to business/finance undergraduates who
are, ideally, in their second year of university. Typically, these
cadetships run for four to five years, during which you’ll work full-time
with Hunter Water and get up to 7 hours per week to attend university.

The NSW Indigenous Cadetship Program provides employment opportunities and financial
support to indigenous students studying full-time.
If you’re an indigenous student
considering a career in accounting, the cadetship program is a great option.
You can gain financial support and workforce experience whilst studying your
first undergraduate degree, Diploma or Advanced Diploma of Accounting.
Cadets
receive:
- A study allowance of $600 (gross) per fortnight
- Up to $500 (gross) per semester for books, etc
- A salary for 12 weeks’ work experience per year
- Possible entitlement to travel and accommodation assistance
- A permanent job once the cadetship and workplace components are successfully
completed.

Many government agencies offer paid Work Placements (sometimes called
Internships) to Accounting undergraduates, usually over the summer
holidays. Public sector placements give you a great insight into the
variety of job roles and career opportunities available in government.

Mentoring
The Lucy Mentoring Program is
designed for women studying accounting, business, finance,
economics or law. The program aims to inspire and educate
women about the employment opportunities available
in the private and public sectors.
Through the Program,
you will develop confidence and learn skills that will
help you to identify goals and develop strategies for
achieving them. A female mentor will guide you through
a work-based activity and group sessions will allow
you to meet and learn from other program participants.
After completing the Lucy Mentoring Program, your understanding
of the public sector combined with your enhanced skills
will enable you to source and take full advantage
of employment and leadership opportunities.
The Lucy
Mentoring Program is available to selected students
from the University of Sydney, University of Western
Sydney, University of Wollongong, UNSW and UNE.

The NSW Public Sector offers a range of Graduate Programs that are
open to accountants. Programs can run from one to three years, depending
on the agency. It’s a great way to gain exposure to the variety of
work the agency offers, as they usually involve placements in up to
four operational areas.

NSW Fast Track Graduate Program
The NSW Fast Track Graduate Program offers high-potential
Accounting (and other) graduates the opportunity
to experience the variety of work in the NSW Public
Sector. The Program places you in three different
agencies for a period of 6 months each, giving you
a total of 18 months experience. You will also enjoy
mentorship, development opportunities and specialised
learning, giving you the skills required for high
level communication, project management and working
in government. The best part is that you’re guaranteed
a permanent job with your first agency at the successful
completion of all work placements!
