The Australian rail industry is diverse, comprising rail operators (freight, passenger, tourist and heritage), manufacturers, suppliers, consultants, track access corporations, maintenance and construction contractors, logistics providers and a wide range of other companies covering all aspects of the industry.

There are over 300 private and public companies involved in the rail industry. The 2003 Rail Industry Survey conducted by the ARA has provided information that the 25 largest rail operators and track owners combined directly employ 42,000 people in the rail industry. Many are employed in the private sector. In many rural and regional centres, employment in the rail or rail related sector is a major source of employment.
