¥ ABOUT SCHOOL
BASED APPRENTICESHIPS AND TRAINEESHIPS
What are school based apprenticeships
and traineeships?
A school based apprenticeship or traineeship gives you
between 4 and 8 units credit towards your HSC depending
on the qualification chosen. In addition to this, school
based apprentices and trainees can also receive HSC credit
for the work component of their apprenticeship or traineeship.
School based traineeships are undertaken part-time during
Years 11 and 12 and are completed by the end of the HSC
year, although they can extend over three or more years
if you undertake your HSC over a longer period. You will
enrol in a certificate II or certificate III level qualification
and will undertake a minimum of 100 days of paid on-the-job
training. As well as your paid work, you will complete
your off-the-job training with a registered training organisation.
Students who complete a school based apprenticeship will
enrol in a certificate III trade qualification, often in
a skill shortage area. School based apprenticeships are
also undertaken part time during Years 11 and 1. However,
at the end of Year 12 you will receive your HSC and continue
with your apprenticeship on a full-time basis post-school
until you graduate as a qualified tradesperson.

For a four-year apprenticeship, a school based apprentice
completes the first year of their apprenticeship, part-time
during Years 11 and 12. School based apprentices and school
based trainees will be on the job for approximately one
day each week but a minimum of 100 days over Year 11 and
Year 12. You are also free to work over the school holidays
and on weekends, should you want to.
For the building trades,
school based apprentices will undertake 144 days of work-based
training over two years while at school. For the plumbing
and electrotechnology trades, 180 days of work-based training
is required.
After finishing Year 12, school based apprentices
continue their training contract with the same employer
and complete their apprenticeship full time.

School based trainees generally undertake a certificate
II traineeship over a period of between 24 and 36 months
during Years 11 and 12. The formal training they undertake
as part of the traineeship contributes directly to their
HSC.
A school based trainee attends on-the-job and/or off-the-job
training for no more than one day per week. You are also
free to work over the school holidays and on weekends,
should you want to.
A school based traineeship up to certificate
II level can be completed by the end of Year 12. In some
cases, your trainee certificate also enables you to progress
to stage two of a full-time apprenticeship, or to undertake
a related higher-level certificate traineeship.
