What goes on at a trade school?
The best thing about trade schools is that, if you successfully
complete your HSC, you will leave school having completed
the first year of your apprenticeship. So you can get a
head start on getting ahead in your career.
At a trade school, you can undertake a school based apprenticeship
or traineeship or another vocational course, while completing
your HSC. You have access to industry-standard facilities
and receive on-the-job-training for approximately one day
each week. And you get paid while you work. For the rest
of the week, you complete off-the-job training, as well
as your other HSC subjects.
A school based apprentice usually continues their training
for up to three years after school, to work in licensed
trades such as construction or automotive. A trainee usually
finishes Year 12 with a certificate II level qualification
in their chosen industry.
What if there isnÕt a trade school nearby?
If you want to do a school based apprenticeship or traineeship,
you donÕt have to go to a trade school. Government high
schools and senior colleges offer them as well. Talk to
a vocational education and training teacher or careers
advisor at your school about your options. |
